EPSRC Industrial Case studentship

Precise location measurement in indoor and outdoor performance sports

Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates for a fully sponsored PhD studentship within the Nottingham Geospatial Institute in the Division of Infrastructure and Geomatics in collaboration with English Institute of Sport.

This case studentship has been developed around a long-term interest by English Institute of Sport in emerging technology for the measurement of surfaces and positioning and attitude determination. Their interest is in the dynamic movement of people and objects e.g. sleds, boats, bikes, as well as, the accurate mapping of the environment, e.g. tracks, fields, spaces, courses. The student will join an established research group in this technology and expanding application area. There may be more than one studentship available.

The student must:

  • Have high-grade qualification: at least the equivalent of a UK 1st or 2.1 class degree in an engineering discipline which ideally should include aspects of remote measurement technology (imaging, laser scanning), integrated sensor systems and satellite positioning technology.  Although students from mathematics, electronics and computer science are also encouraged to apply.
  • Be prepared to travel to spend some time with collaborators and for fieldwork if necessary and the ability to travel and access to own transport is an advantage.
  • Be proficient in both written and spoken English, possess excellent presentation and communication skills and be able to write reports (to sponsors) and academic papers.

Due to the nature of funding, the studentship is available to UK/EU citizens. The PhD scholarship is offered for the duration of three and a half years and will cover full university fees and an enhanced stipend.
