This summer you could work for a local small to medium-sized company (SME) or charity through the Nottingham Internship Scheme. The opportunities are paid and are a minimum of four weeks long, beginning in June.

Through the Nottingham Internship Scheme, I turned a university challenge into a meaningful role supporting a local charity’s tech transformation. It showed me how stepping outside the ‘typical’ route can open doors to impactful, real-world experience.

Why should I complete an internship?
Completing a summer internship could:
- provide work experience and allow you to develop your employability skills.
- give you the soft skills that employers are looking for.
- increase your commercial awareness.
- build your connections with businesses and contacts in the location or sector that you are looking to work in.
- some of the internships have the potential to develop into longer term work and even permanent, graduate employment.
- earn money over the summer.
The majority of these internships will be in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, but some will be further afield.
All of the internships will be based in SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), charities or community interest companies.
Why work for a small to medium-sized (SME) company?
Working in an SME will be a unique experience:
- You are likely to have more responsibility
- When working in a smaller company, you are more likely to build relationships with senior members of staff, you may find yourself sat next to the director
- There may be the opportunity to get involved in all areas of the business, providing a great overview of different business functions

Applications are completed through MyCareer in the application section of each advert. You will need to submit a copy of your CV and a cover letter. For CV and cover letter advice, please visit our webpage on making applications.
Things to consider before applying:
- These are full time internships, typically working a 9am - 5pm working day. Please think about your availability and any other commitments before you apply. Internship hosts may consider hiring on a part-time basis, please specify how many hours you can work per week in your cover letter, you can also confirm this using the check-box in the application form.
- If you are applying for an ‘in person’ internship, please think carefully about which roles best suit your skills and interests as well as the location of the business, please make sure that you will be able to travel to your internship. If you are able to travel to a non-city centre internship, it may be advantageous to consider these roles.
- Once you have applied, your CV and application form will be forwarded to the host company for them to review and progress your application.
- If the host decides to undertake interviews, the format in which they will take place is decided by the host.
- Students can submit multiple applications for different internships.
- NIS internships are typically full time, this will range between 30-35 hours per week, depending on the role and organisation. More flexible work patterns may be offered at the discretion of the organisation to accommodate visa restrictions.

The internships are scheduled to take place following the spring semester exam period.
