Thesis title: Inclusive leadership through Vietnamese Gen Z employees’ sensemaking: the case of hybrid work context
Research summary
Ha Trang's doctoral research investigates the gap between the conceptualisation and demonstration of inclusive leadership. It explores how inclusive leadership is understood in theory and how it is enacted in practice, focusing on the discrepancies between what inclusive leadership is said to mean and what inclusive leaders actually do.
Using sensemaking as a theoretical lens, the study examines the cognitive and emotional processes of Vietnamese Generation Z employees as they interpret and respond to leadership practices. This exploration is situated within an ongoing contextual landscape shaped by tensions between Gen Z employees’ emerging work preferences and the need to respect Vietnam’s hierarchical and collectivist cultural traditions.
The research also considers the complexities introduced by hybrid working arrangements, particularly the paradoxes surrounding work–life balance, productivity, and inclusion. Through this approach, the study seeks to provide a nuanced and contextually grounded understanding of how inclusive leadership is experienced and constructed in contemporary workplace settings.
